Jewish Vocational Service helps individuals and businesses achieve their employment goals by providing the skills necessary for success in today’s workplace.  Individuals making the transition into new work environments benefit from JVS career and employment counseling, job placement, English instruction and occupational skills training programs.  JVS is a non-sectarian, not-for profit corporation founded in 1973.  JVS is a nationally recognized innovator in workforce development, and plays a leadership role in collaborative employment and training efforts throughout San Francisco. 

The JVS BEST Pro program is a professional development series for employment services providers, such as job developers and employment specialists.  The program trains participants to increase the capacity of their respective agencies by improving the services offered to their clients.  BEST Pro has been offered, in varying format, for more than eight years and is funded by the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Community Development (MOCD). The format for the 2008-09 training series has not yet been finalized but is likely to include weekly three-hour workshops offered in two cycles in the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009.

The Youth Pro program is a new program that JVS will be implementing to expand the capacity of youth workforce development staff. Youth employment staff throughout San Francisco will participate in the program to receive training on best practices and procedures that can ensure the highest quality of direct service to clients. This program will launch for the first time in 2008/2009 and is funded by the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (SF OEWD).

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Career Development Manager, The Career Development Coordinator will administer all workshops for both the Youth Pro and BEST Pro programs. The Coordinator will develop, lead and facilitate workshops that build on the expertise of participants to provide training that will be immediately be useful in participants’ work with job-seekers. The Coordinator will work closely with guest speakers, program partners and JVS staff to coordinate programming and workshop content.  The Coordinator will ensure the highest quality instruction for all workshop participants by coordinating the development and maintenance of curricula, facilitating participants’ data collection, monitoring classroom attendance and providing direct instruction. The Coordinator will evaluate effectiveness, and perform other functions necessary to the success of the program.

Responsibilities:

Program Coordination

  • Coordinate, facilitate and teach regularly scheduled workshops for both BEST Pro and Youth Pro training program tracks.
  • Coordinate all logistics including material preparation, room and location assignments, AV needs, guest speaker participation and substitute teachers as needed.
  • Arrange for guest speakers and panelists to participate in workshop delivery; ensure all logistics are coordinated for guest speakers to feel prepared to present.
  • Facilitate opportunities for JVS employment specialists and other JVS staff to take part in the training programs.
  • Incorporate various modalities of teaching which regard to the needs of learning style differences and learning disabilities.
  • Participate in other Client Services departmental coordination as needed.

Program Administration

  • Ensure compliance with contract objectives and with funding source, government, and JVS reporting requirements; represent JVS at appropriate community forums; maintain superior customer service with funders, staff, collaborating agencies, and participants at all times.
  • Perform on-going program assessment and evaluation, participate in agency planning, and provide assistance to agency grant writers where required.
  • Coordinate that all participant feedback, satisfaction, achievement, and other outcomes data are collected on an on-going basis and communicated in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate inputting data in JVS database. Compile, analyze, verify and submit data according to funding schedule and guidelines.
  • Participate in JVS agency meetings and activities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Workshop Facilitation and Classroom Instruction

  • Design, plan and lead workshop sessions for both seasoned and novice employment specialists on topics such as:
    • Improving Your Intake and Case Management Skills
    • Finding and Using Community Resources
    • Facilitating Group and Individual Sessions
    • Applications, On-Line and Otherwise
    • The Master Application and on-line application
    • Developing Your Pitch
    • Organizing the Job Search
    • Creating and Revising Exciting Resumes
    • Improve Your Participants’ Interview Skills
    • Developing Leads through Labor Market
    • Addressing Employer Concerns
    • Networking for Yourself and for Your Participants
  • Provide instruction and facilitation for some portion of each workshop in collaboration with guest speakers (community partners, experts in the field, employers, etc.).
  • Facilitate other Client Services career development workshops as needed.

Curriculum Development

  • Conduct needs assessments; set goals and parameters for instruction; develop and adapt innovative and appropriate curricula, course outlines, and lesson plans; plan and develop new workshops.
  • Regularly evaluate and revise curricula, resources, and materials to keep instruction up-to-date and of the highest quality.
  • Coordinate curricula and course content with other programs at JVS.
  • Gather and develop resources and community referral information to distribute to program participants.

Program Outreach and Community Relations

  • Serve as contact person and act as a liaison between JVS and workforce development agencies that benefit from the training series.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and screen applicants for training programs, and advise applicants on appropriate steps for enrollment. Ensure appropriate client recruitment, enrollment, and education. 
  • Outreach to appropriate referral sources and the general public to attract appropriate workforce staff to participate in program. Establish relationships in the community to coordinate guest speakers based on expertise in the field.
  • In collaboration with the Career Development Manager, ensure that program content and format is meeting the needs of participating workforce development agencies and San Francisco job developers

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Experience):

  • Experience working in the workforce development field with an understanding of the job search process, particularly in relation to populations who face language, cultural, and socio-economic barriers; ability to inspire and motivate program participants to personal excellence.
  • Demonstrated experience in program coordination.
  • Experience teaching or facilitating the specified content area to adult learners in a classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum for a variety of learning styles; a clearly articulated educational philosophy; strong classroom management skills. Excellent cross-cultural communication skills and the ability and willingness to work with economically and culturally diverse clientele. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, patience, diplomacy, and high level of customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail, ability to complete paperwork accurately and in a timely manner; well-organized and able to work under pressure, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Computer proficient in MS Office or similar program, understanding of concept of relational database, competent in using Internet and excellent research abilities.
  • B.A./B.S degree in a related field preferred.

Salary:  $42,000 - $45,000
