The Annual Strictly Business Awards Luncheon

On April 12, 2005, 950 people helped celebrate success in the workplace at the thirteenth annual Strictly Business Award Luncheon, which raised more than $350,000 for JVS programs. One of the highlights was Mayor Gavin Newsom who gave a wonderful speech pointing out the importance workforce development and highlighting the work of JVS. As always, at the center of the event were the remarkable JVS clients who have inspired us with their excellence in the workplace.

Award Winner Stories

Pavel Krepkiy had just graduated and was ready to start practicing law when he and his family moved from Moscow to San Francisco. When he arrived, he realized his overseas education would not help him get a job here, so he turned to JVS to help him put together his resume and find work. At first, he was only able to find a minimum wage administrative position at a law firm, but Pavel knew he could do more. He applied for and won a JVS scholarship, which he used to take an LSAT preparation course. With this additional training, he got a better job as a paralegal, which allows him to support his mother and grandmother. He has since received a second JVS Scholarship, which he is using to prepare to take the Bar exam within the next year.

Pearl Kariakin grew up in a difficult home - so difficult that she voluntarily put herself into foster care as a teenager. Her experiences in her foster home were equally rocky, and when she 'aged out' of foster care at 18, she had few of the skills that would allow her to lead a productive, self-sufficient life. Jobless and receiving public assistance, Pearl heard about the LEAP (Legal Employment Action Program) offered by JVS. LEAP gave Pearl the skills she needed to get a job as a Records Assistant at the law firm Jones Day. Jones Day has been very happy with Pearl's on-the-job performance, and even chose her to represent the firm at a fundraiser for the Legal Aid Society. Pearl is taking courses at City College to become a paralegal, has moved into her own apartment, and, according to her supervisors, is well on her way towards getting a promotion.

Izabella Angert was in the middle of everything - her community, her career, her life - when her family decided to leave Russia and come to San Francisco. When she got here she had to start from scratch, learning a new language and working at jobs that she wouldn't have considered in her home country. Undaunted, Bella took the LVN Refresher course at JVS to increase her job options. She soon landed a job at the Nob Hill Healthcare Center. A born leader, Bella has taken charge of her position at Nob Hill and has actively recruited more than ten nurses from JVS programs. Bella is now responsible for the care of 24 patients, and for supervising the nursing assistants on her floor. More than that, she functions as the unofficial 'den mother' of the nursing staff, helping new nurses learn the ropes, building teamwork, and consistently striving to give the best care possible.

Jason Flory wanted to turn his life around. He was finally drug-free, but his out-of-date skills and hard-to-explain gaps in his work history were keeping him on welfare and out of the workforce. He was interested in computers, so he applied to the JVS Cisco Networking Program. JVS worked extensively with Jason to help him find the right job. They helped him learn how to talk about his past, they prepared him for Cisco Certified Network Associate exam, they paid for the test, and they helped him with his resume and interviewing skills. As a result, Jason got a job as a Network Technician at Office Information Systems, where he is now making more than triple the minimum wage
