On
April 8, 2003,
the 11th Annual Strictly Business honored three JVS clients --
Lisa Adams, Fanya Barer and Aaron Nacamulli -- who have overcome
significant barriers to achieve outstanding success in the workplace.
The event also honored one employer, Heller Ehrman White &
McAuliffe LLP, for its commitment to hire those with barriers

Together
with over 970 business and community leaders, we celebrated their
dedication and triumph and raised over $310,000 that will be used
for job placement, career counseling, tecnhology and skills training
programs -- services that are critical in today's economy.
For
over 29 years, JVS has linked individuals and businesses together
to achieve their employment goals by providing the skills necessary
for success in today's workplace.
The
values upon which JVS was founded continue to guide our work:
the belief in the dignity and power of work to build the lives
of each individual and strengthen the entire community. JVS is
committed to the tradition of Tikkun Olam, to repair the world-
one individual, one triumph, one job at a time.
JVS wishes to thank all the individual contributors, corporate
sponsors and organizations that made the 11th Annual Strictly
Business Award Luncheon a tremendous success.

Leadership Award Winner
Sponsored
by the San Francisco Business Times
Chairman
Barry Levin was on hand to accept the Business Leadership Award
for Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe LLP. Heller Ehrman is
a national firm with global reach, representing established
and emerging market leaders throughout the world.
Not
only do they have a tradition of helping communities and individuals
who cannot afford much needed legal services, they are also
committed to employing those with barriers to employment.
Part
of the Legal Employment Action program since it's inception,
Heller Ehrman currently employs four graduates of JVS' LEAP
program.
"At
Heller Ehrman, we believe that in supporting the LEAP program,"
said Barry Levin, "we make a significant difference in
the community by providing a supportive workplace full of opportunity."
Employee
ot the Year Award Winners
Lisa
Adams-Nelson, Trucker Huss, APC
Sponsored by Macy's West
Lisa
is a 37-year old African-American woman with three children.
Lisa's work experience was sporadic and diverse, when she found
out about the LEAP program.
Although Lisa performed well at her law firm internship, she
was one of the few LEAP graduates who was not hired full-time
at her firm. Lisa learned of this decision on a day when the
rest of her classmates were celebrating their own good news.
Lisa became a regular in the JVS computer lab, using the Internet
to do a self-directed job search and providing LEAP counselors
with a chart of her progress. Within two weeks Lisa had secured
a full-time job at Trucker Huss on the merits of her work at
her law firm internship.
Fanya
Barer, CORESTAFF/Pacific Gas & Electric Company
Sponsored by California State Automobile
Association
Fanya
emigrated from the former Soviet republic of Moldova. She came
here with her husband and grown sons in order to find a new
life free from poverty and anti-Semitism. She was over 50 when
she arrived in the U.S. Fanya arrived to the U.S. with some
knowledge of English, but needed to improve her skills in order
to be competitive in the local labor market. JVS
helped Fanya to first improve her English skills and then to
develop her office skills.
Through
an internship at the Exploratorium, Fanya practiced her new
skills and built her resume. Her current supervisor was willing
to take the risk of hiring someone who had never worked in a
paid position in the U.S. because he knew that JVS stood behind
the candidate and that JVS staff were available to support the
new employee.
Aaron
Nacamulli, San Francisco Recreation & Park Department/Julius
Kahn Playground
Sponsored by Levi Strauss & Co.
Aaron
is a 15 year old with several learning disabilities. He came to
JVS looking for a job that allowed him to work with animals or
kids but was having difficulty finding a worksite with a structured
environment.
Kids
with disabilities often times are labeled and pre-judged which
is damaging to their self-esteem. Aaron was able to break himself
out of this labeled "box" and really see that he could
thrive and grow in a place outside of school. Aaron will be able
to take his experiences and newfound skills and apply that to
whatever he pursues in the future.
