Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Refresher Program
JVS
and City College of San Francisco offer a four-month training program
for nurses, either trained abroad or in the United States, who need
a refresher course and skills brush-up, as well as an introduction
(or reintroduction) to the American health care delivery system
and coaching on passing the LVN licensure exam. This program is
a successful ten-year collaboration with JVS, City College of San
Francisco's Licensed Vocational Nursing Program and local medical
facilities.
The program offers:
- Vocational
ESL at JVS in the semester or summer prior to training.

The LVN Refresher Course: nursing theory and laboratory classes
at the John Adams campus of CCSF and clinical assignments in medical/surgical,
acute rehabilitation, and maternity at local medical facilities
(CPMC Davies Medical Center, San Francisco General Hospital and
Highland Hospital, Oakland).
- Assistance
applying for the state boards and preparing for board examination.
- Job
placement assistance at the end of training - we'll help you get
that first job and then your second one too!
You
can participate in this program if:
- You
have a nursing license from the US or abroad (valid or expired).
- You
have applied for California nursing licensure.
- You
have an ESL level of intermediate-high (CCSF level of 120, 42
or higher).

You have work authorization and a valid social security number.
- You
have the time available to devote to this intensive, full-time
training program (approximately 30 hours per week plus homework).

Patient Services Representative Training (PSR)
JVS
and UCSF Medical Center offer a 16-week training program
for qualified candidates who are interested in pursuing customer service and administrative career paths at UCSF Medical Center. This program will include full-time training at JVS in topics such as soft skills for medical administrative positions, intermediate computer skills, medical office procedures and terminology, and job search skills. UCSF will provide training on medical insurance and its propriety scheduling software, giving participants an advantage when competing for open positions at UCSF.
The
program offers:
- 6 week PAID part-time internship
- Training at UCSF in customized computer programs
- Individual job search assistance
- Training in topics such as:
- Soft skills for medical administrative positions
- Intermediate computer skills
- Medical office procedures and terminology
- Job search skills
Eligibility Requirements :
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Low-income
- Clean background check
- Proficiency in English
- Strong communication skills
- Documentation of authorization to work in US
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills

Registered
Nurse (RN) Refresher Program
San Francisco
Currently accepting applications for 2009.
JVS and City College of San Francisco (CCSF) offer an 11-week
training program for Registered Nurses, either trained abroad or in
the United States, who need a refresher course, have a lapsed RN
license, or want a nursing skills brush-up. This is a successful
4-year program offered in collaboration between JVS, CCSF’s
Registered Nursing Program, and local medical facilities.
The
program offers:
- Theoretical & clinical practice experience at 3 local medical facilities
- General support in completing the course (individualized coaching & referral to resources)
- Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) certification for 30 continuing education units
- Preparation support for the NCLEX-RN exam (if necessary
- Job placement assistance – we’ll help you get your next RN job!

Hayward
Currently accepting applications for 2009.
JVS and Chabot College of Hayward offer a ten-week training program for foreign-trained Registered Nurses who need a refresher course, have a lapsed RN license, or want a nursing skills brush-up. This new program is the result of collaboration between JVS, Chabot College of Hayward, and local medical and educational facilities. Unfilled spots may become available for U.S. trained nurses.
The program offers:
- The 6 unit RN Refresher Course including
48 didactic hours at Chabot College & 186 clinical and skills
lab hours at 2 or 3 local hospitals;
- General support in completing the course,
such as individualized coaching and referral to resources;
- Preparation support for the NCLEX-RN exam
(if necessary);
- Certification for 30 continuing education
units (CEUs) provided upon completion of class;
- Job placement assistance – we’ll help you
get your first or next RN job!
You can participate in this program if you have:
- an RN nursing license from California
(valid or expired) or
- a California LVN license and at least 6
months work experience as an LVN; (only foreign-trained RN)
- approval by the Board of Registered
Nursing to take the NCLEX-RN exam
- an ESL level of high-advanced;
- authorization to work in the U.S.;
- valid American
Heart Association CPR certification

Psychiatric Nursing Program
Are you a foreign-trained nurse?
Need psychology coursework to take the NCLEX?
We can help.
The Immigrant Nurse Re-entry Program (INRP)
helps foreign-trained nurses get their licenses and start working as
RNs. The INRP is offering a specialty nursing package to help you
get the psychiatric nursing coursework you need to sit for the NCLEX-RN
exam.
Our program includes:

Opportunity to enroll in classes usually
offered only to Chabot Nursing students

One-on-one coaching and support from the
day you sign up to the day you take the NCLEX-RN, and beyond!

4 units of psychiatric nursing course
credit (didactic, clinical, and skills lab hours), and 36
Continuing Education Units for LVN and CNA students.
Course prep work will begin in September, and
will culminate in an 18-hour/week class running from January through
May of 2009. Application deadline is August 10th.

To be eligible for this program, you must have
verification of RN Nursing licensure from abroad, a letter from the
Board of Registered Nursing identifying coursework needed for NCLEX-RN
exam eligibility, proof of authorization to work in U.S., and an ESL
level of high-advanced.
