Vocational
English as a Second Language (VESL)
The
Vocational English as a Second Language program delivers job search
and retention skills to nonnative speakers of English. In addition,
the VESL department teaches clients the listening and speaking skills,
job culture functions and vocabulary necessary to be successful
in job search and retention.
The core VESL classes are taught in three-week topics - telephoning,
interviewing, applications and resumes, and job retention. This
program is funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, the San
Francisco Private Industry Council, The Workforce investment Act,
and the California Department of Education. The intensive VESL classes
are taught in four segments: Basic VESL and Life skills; Occupation-specific
vocabulary; Computer assisted VESL; and Occupational Training. The
intensive VESL program is funded by a combination of grants from
the EDD, The Levi's Foundation, NAFTA, the California Department
of Education, and The Department of Labor.
