Jewish Vocational Service helps individuals and businesses achieve
their employment goals by providing the skills necessary for success
in today’s workplace. Individuals making the transition into new
work environments benefit from JVS career and employment counseling,
job placement, English instruction and occupational skills training
programs. JVS is a non-sectarian, not-for profit corporation
founded in 1973. JVS is a nationally recognized innovator in
workforce development, and plays a leadership role in collaborative
employment and training efforts throughout San Francisco.
Position
Summary:
The Vocational
ESL instructor will work on a team of teachers, program
coordinators, managers, and other JVS staff to provide quality
language instruction for clients in intensive occupational training
programs or incumbent worker training programs, primarily in a
healthcare setting. These programs are of varying length and can
last anywhere from 12 weeks to one year. Together with other
teachers and JVS staff, the VESL instructor will plan lessons, teach
classes, facilitate assessment, and participate in all
administrative duties related to instructional programs.
Responsibilities:
Instructional
Delivery
- Using
a combination of methodologies to address the varied learning
needs of students, teach vocational English, job search skills,
and other basic skills necessary for employment, job retention,
career advancement, and placement in training programs.
- Revise
curriculum and update lesson plans and materials that emphasize
the development of interactive skills, specifically speaking
with confidence and listening comprehension; teach related
workplace culture and communication skills to enhance students’
long-term self-sufficiency in the American workplace.

Evaluate, track, and report on student work, progress, and
attendance; participate in the collection of pre- and post-test
data; maintain accurate records according to JVS and funding
source requirements.
- Work
successfully with a team of teachers to coordinate instructional
delivery, accountability, and assess student needs.

Communicate with counselors regarding student attendance,
progress, and problems, including providing written evaluations,
as needed.
Curriculum
Development
- In
collaboration with instructional staff and the Allied Health and
Client Services departments, develop and maintain innovative and
appropriate curricula; course outlines and lesson plans based on
clearly articulated educational objectives and strategies; plan
and develop new courses; select materials and conduct research
to address student learning needs.

Regularly evaluate and revise curricula, resources, and
materials to keep instruction up-to-date and of the highest
quality.

Oversee assessment of clients for VESL programs.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Experience):
-
Bachelor’s Degree and ESL certificate, MA preferred; a minimum
of two years recent experience working with adults in an
employment development or educational setting.

Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum for a variety
of learning styles; a clearly articulated educational
philosophy; strong classroom management skills.

Understanding of job search process, particularly in relation to
populations who face language, cultural, and socio-economic
barriers; ability to inspire and motivate program participants
to personal excellence.

Ability to build and maintain working relationships with a
variety of individuals and to respond to change positively;
flexibility and willingness to participate in agency’s on-going
development; positive and professional attitude.

Ability to teacher language learners at multiple levels and in a
multi-level classroom; experience and interest in teaching
literacy and beginning levels a must.

Attention to detail, ability to complete paperwork accurately
and in a timely manner; well-organized and able to work under
pressure, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Proficiency in Spanish, Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, or
Vietnamese and familiarity in working with immigrants, refugees,
and asylees a plus.

Experience with CASAS assessment, EL Civics, and TopsPro a plus.

Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar program; Internet
skills.
Salary:
$35-$45/hour instruction; $20-$25/hour meetings and curriculum
development
