Making a difference - A volunteer success story

Lillian Markinson, whose background includes teaching ESL and Business Education at City College, is an enthusiastic Conversation Partner volunteer at JVS. "I told my classes at City College," she says, "that it has to be fun, or it won't work." That combination holds true in her weekly conversations with Asya Tilman, who emigrated from Uzbekistan four years ago. Asya agrees. "It's lots of fun and very helpful for me. I didn't study English in Uzbekistan, because I never expected to come to the United States.

"I read books and I understand. But conversation is hard. Because of Lillian, I speak easier." Their time together has been well spent - Asya recently reached her goal of working full time in medical billing, with higher pay than her previous job.
