"Unlike
most 16-year-olds, I knew that if I presented myself well
at the interview, and had a resume and a cover letter, I
would stand out. JVS helped me with all that."

Even
as a freshman in high school, Shakaricka's determination
and drive to succeed were obvious to everyone around her.
She first became involved with JVS through a summer internship
program, where she worked at a childcare center in Hunter's
Point. Recognizing her potential, JVS staff asked her to
become a Counselor-in-Training for the program, developing
and facilitating workshops for her peers.
When
she needed a job for the holidays, Shakaricka again turned
to JVS. Her preparedness, dedication, and punctuality impressed
JVS staff and potential employers alike, and she quickly
landed a job at Macy's West for the holiday season. Her
supervisors at Macy's were so pleased by her work that they
kept Shakaricka on board a month after her scheduled end
date.
As
soon as her Macy's job ended, Shakaricka came right back
to JVS to look for new job leads, and soon found her current
position as Clinical Assistant at United Behavioral Health.
Now, as a high school senior, Shakaricka is a very busy
young lady - on top of her classes and homework, she is
working two jobs, and applying for colleges! Yet somehow
she still manages to find time to participate in the JVS
Youth Advisory Council, helping our staff ensure that more
young men and women like Shakaricka realize their dreams.
