The
Kohn Summer Intern Program offers unique summer work in the Bay
Area Jewish Community. Since its inception in 1986, nearly 400 college
students have participated in this program.
The Kohn Summer Intern Program in Jewish communal service is an
innovative eight-week program for college students sponsored by
Jewish Vocational Service.
Participants are placed in professional positions at leading Bay
Area Jewish agencies for the purpose of gaining valuable workplace
experience, an opportunity for supervision and mentoring from Jewish
community leaders, exploring volunteer opportunities in the Jewish
community, and exposure to issues currently facing the Jewish community.
JVS will match participants to agencies according to their expressed
area of interest and skill. Potential internship placements include:
political advocacy, marketing, public relations, advertising, finance,
journalism, event coordination, Israel advocacy, educational programming,
and direct service with youth and the elderly. |

- Undergraduates
who have completed at least one year of college and have a demonstrated
commitment to the Jewish community.
- Primary
residence in San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, the Peninsula, or the
Greater East Bay (limited spots available for East Bay).
- Students
with good academic standing and demonstrated leadership qualities.

What is the Kohn Summer Intern Program?
The Kohn Summer Intern Program is an eight-week summer internship program for college students who are interested in Jewish Communal Service. Students are placed in professional positions in leading Jewish agencies around the Bay Area to gain valuable workplace experience, exposure to issues currently facing the Jewish community, and opportunities for supervision and mentoring from Jewish community leaders.
What are the requirements for eligibility to the program?
Applicants for the program must be undergraduates who have completed at least one year of college, be in good academic standing, have the ability to demonstrate a commitment to the Jewish community, and be residents of San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, the Peninsula, or the Greater East Bay (limited spots available for the East Bay).
How competitive is the program?
The program is very competitive, as there are only 33 placements available for internships. In previous years there have been over 70 applicants!
Is there a stipend?
Yes! The 2007 stipend was $2500.00 per intern. Each year’s stipend is determined by our funding.
What types of placements do interns receive?
Interns are placed according their interests and career goals. Participating agencies develop projects that involve the intern as much as possible. Potential placements include political advocacy, marketing, direct service with youth and the elderly, journalism, event planning, finance, and curricular development.
