  Mayra Bañuelos

At 19, Mayra was willing to give up everything she knew in Mexico to get a better education in the United States.  But her struggles didn’t end once she arrived.  When Mayra was the victim of a violent assault, the Sherriff’s Department referred her to the JVS LEAP training, where she could learn the skills she needed to get a job in a law firm.  Despite frustrating eligibility hurdles, Mayra persevered, and at the end of the program, she got a temporary position at Farella Braun + Martel LLP.  The law firm appreciated her so much that they soon hired her on full time, giving her the financial stability she needs while she pursues her computer science degree at City College of San Francisco.
