others on the road to self-sufficiency. Whether you would like to
volunteer to work directly with clients or “behind the scenes,”, one

Making a difference - A volunteer success story Lillian Markinson brings her ESL and Business Education skills to JVS as an enthusiastic Conversation Partner volunteer, working with clients to improve their conversational skills, and in turn, their employment potential. Lillian says, "I told my classes at City College that practicing conversation skills has to be fun, or it won't work." And her conversation partner, Asya Tilman, agrees. Asya emigrated from Uzbekistan four years ago. “I didn't study English in Uzbekistan, because I never expected to come to the United States.,” she says. "I read books and I understand. But conversation is hard. Because of Lillian, I speak easier." Their time together has been well spent - Asya recently reached her goal of securing a full-time, higher paying job, working in medical billing. |
