What is the EXCEL program?
EXCEL – Excellence Through Community Engagement & Learning – is a work-based learning program that uses both classroom and on-the-job training to prepare participants for career path jobs in the healthcare sector.
How do I know if I am eligible for JobsNOW!?
Individuals receiving CalWORKS and PAES (Personal Assisted Employment Services), CalFresh, Medi-CAL recipients, and former Foster Youth are eligible for the JobsNow! Program and strongly encouraged to apply. You can apply for benefits here: https://www.mybenefitscalwin.org/ Or call 877-562-1669. Eligibility will be verified by the City and County of San Francisco’s Human Services Agency. Current or former Public Service Trainee participants are NOT eligible to participate in the program.
When does the EXCEL virtual training begin?
The EXCEL training class will begin on approximately November 7, 2022 and continue through approximately January 20, 2023.
What is the application deadline?
Applications must be submitted by September 16, 2022. No exceptions will be made for late submissions.
What if I have a criminal conviction?
Applications will be considered on an individual basis and a conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant.
Is the training/internship paid?
The live virtual JVS training portion of EXCEL is not paid. However, Interns will earn approximately $21.77/hourr during the 16 week internship at UCSF.
When will the on-site internships at UCSF begin and end?
Internships will begin on/around the week of January 23, 2023. Internships will end approximately during the month of May 2023.
What is the UCSF internship schedule?
During the internship at UCSF, interns will work on-site 32 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, typically 8:00am – 5:00pm. Friday’s are live virtual sessions with JVS 9:00am – 12:00pm. These Friday’s are mandatory and unpaid.
Where are the UCSF internship locations?
Participants must be able to work at any San Francisco based UCSF location including, but not limited to, Mission Bay, Parnassus, and Mount Zion locations.
What are the physical and mental requirements of the internship?
The physical and mental requirements may vary depending upon the UCSF placement site. The physical requirements are typically related to frequent sitting, standing, bending; using hands, fingers and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and mouse. The mental requirements are typically related to the ability to use reasonable and sound judgement and communication in accordance with UCSF policy. More information will be provided during the live ZOOM sessions.
What does the Occupational Health clearance & substance abuse screen include?
The health clearance, performed at UCSF Occupational Health Services, will determine if an individual is able to perform the physical and mental requirements of the internship, with or without reasonable accommodation. Individuals will also be required to complete a urinary drug screen. Please note, testing positive will disqualify an individual from participation in the EXCEL program.
Will I be guaranteed a job after the internship ends?
We can never guarantee an intern will be hired when the internship ends. Upon successful completion of the internship, EXCEL graduates will have the skills and experience to be highly competitive for UCSF positions.
How do I apply?
