The Director of Human Resources provides leadership, planning, and oversight for the Exploratorium’s team of HR Generalists and Administrator. The Director leads the team in developing and implementing systems, policies, and practices that result in a safe, healthy, and equitable work culture for approximately 325 regular and 300 additional employees, and actively works to enhance a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization. While providing outstanding customer service to employees and managers, the Director makes recommendations to leadership around a constantly changing external employment environment, and executes accordingly around employee policies and life cycle (recruiting, hiring, onboarding, compensation, retention, reviews, and terminations), HR systems and operations, employee benefit plans, performance management, and employee/labor relations. The HR Director reports to the Senior Director of Organizational Development.
- Lead Department vision and strategy for human resource functions. Ensure the department follows best practices for: job descriptions and classification, talent acquisition and onboarding, compensation and pay administration, benefits and leaves, employee and labor relations, performance management and training.
- Ensure the HR database, systems and records are maintained accurately.
- Ensure compliance with, and manage reporting for, city, state and federal laws and regulations.
- Ensure the Employee handbook, policies, and practices provide up-to-date legal and equitable guidance for staff and are well integrated with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Provide fiscal and contract management and implementation of a comprehensive benefits program; review benefits annually for cost and level of coverage, and make recommendations for benefits changes.
- Act as resource, problem solver and advisor to employees on a wide range of human resource issues; oversee accurate and timely responses to administrative and employee relations questions raised by staff.
Employee Life Cycle
- Oversee recruiting and hiring functions with a focus on diversifying the workforce. Work in collaboration with the DE&I Program Director on diversity and inclusion initiatives, including diversity outreach and recruitment, networking, and reporting.
- Support the development and practices of goal-setting, feedback, and annual performance review cycle.
- Champion training and development activities and staff recognition, engagement, and retention programs.
- Oversee the practice of positive employee relations and support union relations through contract interpretation, grievance handling, and participation in contract negotiations.
- Provide inspirational, supportive and empowering leadership for a diverse group of passionate, committed and skilled staff members.
- Drive the work of the department to achieve organizational goals and support a culture of continuous improvement in the team.
- Coach the team on problem solving and work methods and practices. Distribute and balance workload, monitor and report on the status of work.
- Lead department annual planning, operating metrics reporting, and budget management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- Minimum 12 years of experience in people/human resource, with at least 5 years’ experience successfully building, leading, and managing an HR department or unit
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly preferred
- Strong generalist background with demonstrated success in managing HR operations with the long-range goals of the organization and continuous improvement approach
- Demonstrated high-level administrative analysis requiring in-depth evaluation of issues, information gathering and synthesis, evaluation of options, and presentation of solutions to meet the needs of various groups in the organization
- High level of emotional intelligence and cultural competency, along with demonstrated ability to use a variety of conflict resolution techniques to successfully manage highly charged emotional situations, and to coach others to do so
- Outstanding leadership skills; ability to model team-building and consensus-building in the workplace.
- Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to develop and deliver training, policies, status reports, and correspondence to foster shared understanding and propel organizational culture
- Demonstrated creativity, flexibility, and sense of humor
- Ability to work in a non-traditional environment utilizing a management style that promotes teamwork, creativity and open communication
- Experience in a Union environment a plus
