The Role

JVS is seeking a full-time Counselor for its High School and Bridge Programs. Under the direction of the Work Resource Program Manager, the role will partner with select San Francisco high schools to provide industry-aligned, work-based learning activities that support students’ current and future educational and employment success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support high school students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or 504 Plans in preparing  for, and obtaining, competitive employment, entry into career pathway training and internship programs as well preparation to self-advocate in IEP meetings

  • Collaborate with existing employer/training partners; research, identify and establish relationships with new employer/training partners that meet the needs and interests of program participants and the department as a whole

  •  Support program teammates with other program activities: outreach, enrollment, skill development workshops, remote career exploration, and internships

  • Collaborate with school-site administration, teachers, staff, and other stakeholders to implement programming at the site, remotely, and support the positive school community

Client Support

  • Through one-on-one and group coaching, support program participants in:

    • Exploring jobs/careers of interest and the associated career pathway training and internship programs

    • Preparing  for, and obtaining, competitive employment, entry into career pathway training and internship programs

    • Successful completion of career pathway training and internship programs and successful retention of competitive employment

    • Connecting to programs with caring and appropriate adults to support their continued transition

  • Collaborate with employers and career pathway training/ internship programs to support the above outcomes for program participants

  • Collaborate with school-site administration, teachers, and staff to provide a high-quality experience for students both on-site and off

  • Identify participant needs and work with the school and program staff to connect the participant to resources

Program Support

  • As appropriate, participate in planning for, coordinate additional program activities, and support teammates

  • Identify and provide feedback on ways to increase student support, successful transition, and overall program outcomes

  • Support the development of collaborative vision with school site while maintaining alignment to agency, department, and program goals

Qualifications and Competencies

Minimum Competencies/Qualifications

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Excellent youth engagement and relationship management skills with school and employer/training partners

  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills

  • Able to utilize an intersectional racial equity lens while working in a multi-cultural environment with diverse staff, partners, and clientele

  • Strong organizational skills, able to manage priorities, meet deliverables and deadlines

  • Able to work independently, as part of a team, and flexible to meet evolving needs of participants, partners, and program

  • Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Drive

  • Experience supporting youth in learning about jobs/careers and obtaining competitive employment or entry into career training programs

  • Experience working with youth and maintaining appropriate boundaries

  • Experience facilitating engaging youth workshops both in-person and remotely

Preferred Competencies/Qualifications

  • Familiar coaching and supporting students while using youth development practices

  • Familiar with Slack, and Salesforce

  • Knowledge of youth training/employment landscape in San Francisco and the Bay Area

  • Experience outreaching to, and securing, career exploration opportunities with employers

  • Experience organizing events and large scale activities with multiple partners
